Detecting Chances Of Suicide Before It's Too LateImageAccording to recent studies, patients living with bipolar disorder who have mixed states, melancholic depressive features, or have episodes with multiple antidepressant treatments, have a heightened risk of suicide.

"This study...underscores the growing impression that bipolar II disorder patients have high levels of morbidity, disability, and mortality," says Ross Baldessarini and colleagues from the McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

There is a significant error in this article:

" The lifetime rate of suicidal ideation was significantly higher for BD-II patients at 53.5 percent, compared to 36.7 percent for BD-II patients." I am assuming that it's supposed to be

BD-I patients at 53.5 percent

and

36.7 percent for BD-II patients

The article content has been updated to more accurately reflect the findings of the research.

Specifically, the article was adjusted to read as follows in the section questioned:

It was found that 41.5% of the patients had thoughts of suicide, while 19.7% had actual attempts. The lifetime rate of suicidal ideation was significantly higher for BD-II patients at 53.5 percent, compared to 36.7 percent for BD-I patients. Between subtypes of bipolar disorder, there wasn't a significant difference in suicide attempts; however, there were many more attempts among women than men per year (3.0 compared to 0.9 per 100 people per year).

It is important to note that the article correctly indicates the research finds that suicide risks are not lower among bipolar II patients in comparison to bipolar I patients. "BD-II is not a milder or attenuated variant of BD-I"
