The results of a new Danish cohort study show that women have a higher risk of developing bipolar disorder if they experience psychiatric symptoms during the two-week period immediately after delivery.
From Aarhus University in Denmark, Trine Munk-Olsen, PhD, and colleagues reported that women were four times more likely to develop bipolar disorder if they experience psychiatric symptoms during the 14 days post delivery than women who did not experience these symptoms.
There is an apparent link between bipolar disorder and childbirth that Munk-Olsen says has been well documented by herself and others in several studies; however, many women who experience symptoms of a psychiatric disorder in the period immediately after giving birth are not given a bipolar disorder diagnosis.
“For this reason, we were interested in following women with non-bipolar postpartum psychiatric episodes over time to study if they, at a later stage, convert to a bipolar diagnosis,” said Munk-Olsen.
The study used information from the entire Danish

A new study looking at advanced paternal age and mental illness reveals that there is a higher chance for children to develop bipolar disorder when they are born to older fathers.
This is one of the largest studies done on this subject. Previous studies have seen a link between older dads to schizophrenia and autism, and a Danish study done last year made this connection to bipolar disorder as well. Sweden’s Karolinska Institute did a new study that reinforces this conclusion.
It is believed that older men are more likely to

Researchers are conducting a study to see how children between the ages of 8 and 14 with symptoms of bipolar disorder or depression could benefit from psychotherapy treatment and omega-3 fatty acid supplements.
More specifically, researches are looking at the combination of psychotherapy and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in foods like flaxseed and wild ocean fish to see how the combination improves mood disorder symptoms, such as reducing irritability and improving concentration, self esteem, and sleeping and eating habits.
They have been studied separately, but this is the first time that psychotherapy and omega-3 supplements are being examined together to
