A new study looked at patients with bipolar disorder to determine how mania and depression circuits contribute to the illness.
Researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to analyze brain activity of patients in different mood phases of bipolar disorder. They looked for abnormal brain activity while participants tried to control their reactions to emotional and non-emotional materials.

For the first time, an accurate recovery measurement test has been developed that allows those living with bipolar disorder to measure recovery by including their personal experiences. The bipolar recovery questionnaire (BRQ) includes 36 questions that take into consideration the evolving perception about what “recovery” really is.

Symptoms of anxiety in patients with bipolar disorder may be reduced by mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) according to a report by researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia.
MBCT appeared to help reduce anxiety in the patients with bipolar disorder, however did not relieve symptoms of depression or mania.
