Researchers have discovered that broken molecular ‘motors’ in the brain are responsible for inducing stress and anxiety, seen in a study of mice. These findings may help researchers understand the cause of anxiety and help them develop new treatments for anxiety disorders.
In the mice study, researchers focused on the KIF13A motor, which is responsible for carrying serotonin receptors to the surface of neurons. If the brain does not properly transport serotonin, anxiety levels in the animals grew higher.

Researchers from the US and Brazil have found that six weeks of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with an antidepressant medication could be a significant treatment for patients with depression.
TDCS, a form of brain stimulation, sends weak electrical currents through the brain. This treatment, combined with the antidepressant medication sertraline (Zoloft), showed an improvement in close to two-thirds of depressed participants in the study.
