Staying Connected-Feeling a sense of belonging is critical for both consumers and caregiversAll humans require companionship. Having people around us who love us—and who we love—gives us a sense of community and belonging. It’s important when we’re well, and it’s critical when we have an illness, whether it’s mental or physical.

But humans also have a natural instinct to avoid uncomfortable situations. Fearful of saying the wrong thing, we stay away and say nothing at all. That leaves the individual with the diagnosis—and oftentimes their families—feeling isolated and alone.

New research from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry has found that molecular mechanisms that lead to schizophrenia may be different in patients who do not respond to antipsychotic medications compared to those who do. The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, could explain why antipsychotic medication is not effective for up to a third of patients with schizophrenia.

Lack of sleep could be a marker for schizophrenia: StudyIs schizophrenia connected to sleep problems? A new study published in the journal Neuron looked at lack of sleep and the connection to triggering symptoms of schizophrenia. Researchers from the University of Bristol and Lilly Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience analyzed the effects that not getting enough sleep has on the brain.

The brain activity of rats engineered to have schizophrenia was examined while the rats were sleeping and in a state of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
